Roland DG Unveils its First Wet Mill and a New Dry Mill for the Production of Precision Dental Prosthetics

Roland DG Corporation announced the simultaneous release of its first 4-axis wet mill (DWX-4W)and its latest state-of-the-art 5-axis dry mill (DWX-51D). With the addition of the DWX-4W, Roland DG now offers the option of a comprehensive, two-mill combination capable of producing a wide range of dental prosthetics from a vast assortment of materials.


Since its launch in 2010, the DWX series has gained industry recognition for its desktop size, user-friendliness, robust reliability and open architecture. As the popularity of CAD/CAM software, digital scanners and advanced materials ushered in a new era of dental technology, the DWX-series quickly became an industry standard with over 3,000 units sold worldwide. According to Takuro Hosome, Roland DG Corporation’s manager of dental business development, one of the reasons these mills are so popular is their open architecture, which allows users to choose whichever software, scanner or materials they wish rather than being locked in to one manufacturer.


“We based the new DWX-51D on nearly 30 years of proven Roland DG 3D milling technology, as well as extensive feedback from existing users of our DWX-50 milling machine,” said Hosome. “The result is a next-generation mill that’s not only incredibly advanced but also extremely easy to operate.”


Equipped with a ten-station automatic tool changer (ATC), a new C-clamp with torque wrench for easier loading of materials, and an expanded Virtual Machine Panel (VPanel) with built-in maintenance routine, the DWX-51D takes dry-milling to a whole new level. It is capable of producing copings, crowns, full bridges and abutments and other prosthetics from zirconia, wax, PMMA, composite resin, PEEK and gypsum with unparalleled speed and precision. Simultaneous 5-axis machining with 360-degree rotation in clockwise or counterclockwise directions (A axis) and 30-degree tilting toward the front or back (B axis) supports deep undercuts. For higher quality output, the DWX-51D employs an improved airflow system, which boosts vacuum performance and prevents dust from building up in the milling area. The ten-station ATC enables multiple tooling options, as well as unattended operation from start to finish. For optimum convenience, a colour-coded light informs the technician of the machine’s operational status. “If the machine is running unattended (as many labs do) the user receives e-mail notification if an error occurs or when milling has been completed,” explained Hosome.


Roland DG’s DWX-4W wet mill is specially designed for milling glass ceramics and composite resins, which are popular with both dentists and patients for producing aesthetically superior crowns, inlays, onlays and veneers. In addition to milling on X, Y and Z axes, the DWX-4W rotates pin-type blocks 360 degrees on a fourth axis (A axis) to support undercuts. The DWX-4W also features a high-performance Jaeger DentaDrive spindle that operates at speeds of up to 60,000 RPM for precision milling and unmatched reliability. A multi-pin clamp allows milling up to three different pin-type materials simultaneously, while a four-station ATC automatically changes grinding burs as needed without interrupting production. It is also equipped with a fully-integrated pump and coolant system with a slide-out container for simple maintenance.


Both the DWX-4W and DWX-51D boast touch-button controls and automated milling, making them easy to use even for novices. “The workflow is very simple,” noted Hosome. “After installing the material and milling tools into the machine, technicians use the VPanel to configure settings from their computer. With just a few clicks of a mouse, production is underway.” These new dental mills feature a slim, attractive design, but the beauty of these machines is much more than skin deep. Unsurpassed performance, accuracy and efficiency also come standard. Ball screws for the X, Y and Z axes help maximise precision and reliability. “Another feature that customers really like is the multi-cast capability of our devices, allowing the user to connect up to four respective DWX machines to a single system for centralised control from one PC,” Hosome added.


Roland DG believes its multiple-device solution – combining the DWX-4W with the DWX-51D – provides significant advantages over single machines that offer both dry and wet milling. “Roland DG’s two-machine system enables users to perform both dry and wet milling, as well as process different materials simultaneously and without a changeover,” Hosome said. “Unlike dual-function machines which tend to compromise performance in their attempt to multi-task, our solution allows each mill to specialise in its intended function, ensuring optimum results while saving time, effort and money.”
