Hyaluronic Acid against Oral Lesions, a Trending Topic at the Journées Dentaires Internationales du Québec 2016

During the 46th Journées Dentaires internationals du Québec (JDIQ) held on May 30 & 31 at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal, more than 1,000 dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and dental students discovered one of the most talked about healthcare ingredients in the world, hyaluronic acid, and how it can help in the treatment of oral lesions.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is the medicinal ingredient of Gengigel, a newly Health Canada approved natural product indicated to help relieve pain and reduce gingival inflammation associated with oral lesions, dry mouth, ulcers, gingivitis and other types of oral wounds.

HA is a natural part of the human body and a constituent of connective tissue. It creates a protection against oral lesions by forming a barrier against air and bacteria and speeds the healing process by enhancing the absorption of HA by the oral tissue receptors. HA is essential for healthy gingival tissue. In the initial stage of inflammation and periodontal disease, tissue requirement for HA increases by 200 per cent, demonstrating its central role in regulating cell turnover and optimising tissue regeneration. By lacking HA, the tissues will not restore the normal free water balance that causes swelling. Healing will be delayed and inflammation will continue. – Kahaliah Richards
