Myanmar Dental Health Science Conference 2023 in Nay Pyi Taw

The Myanmar Dental Health Science Conference 2023 organised by the Ministry of Health took place from 3-4 Nov at the Myanmar International Convention Centre-II (MICC-II) in the country’s capital city of Nay Pyi Taw, under the theme ‘Quality Dental Care for Community’.

Dental experts from Thailand, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Malaysia participated in the 2-day conference where local specialists delivered quality treatment systems and reading sessions of 32 posters and 30 papers were held. In attendance were Member of the State Administration Council (SAC) Dr Ba Shwe, Union Minister for Health Prof Dr Thet Khaing Win, and chairman of the Nay Pyi Taw Council.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Ba Shwe highlighted the holding of the conference to enhance friendship between the dental healthcare providers, support the dental health subject, create opportunities to learn international standards, provide continuous learning opportunities, handover the skills of retired dental specialists to new generations and strengthen the cooperation between the dentists of Tatmadaw and Ministry of Health.

Then, Union Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win spoke on the recruitment of human resources for dental healthcare services for different age groups, awareness campaigns for health and dental services at schools for the students, and healthcare services in remote regions provided by under the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Defence.

Dr Thet Khaing Win then attended the signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the exchange of medical knowledge on surgical treatment of congenital cleft lip and palate patients between the Department of Medical Services and the Korea University Medicine.

On day two of the Myanmar Dental Health Science Conference, Deputy Minister for Health Prof Dr Aye Tun attended the signing ceremony to extend an MoU between Myanmar and the Faculty of Dentistry, Khon Kaen University, Thailand to exchange medical knowledge, and academic methods and to strengthen collaboration for research on dental health.

In addition, professors from the Korean University of Medicine and the Japan Heart Foundation shared knowledge on dental implant treatments and cleft lip and palate surgeries respectively. This was followed by a discussion of face, jaw and oral surgeries contributed by a surgeon of the International Medical University, Malaysia.

Myanmar Dental Council chairman Prof Dr Paing Soe and council member Prof Dr Myo Win discussed the ethics in dentistry while Prof Dr Aung Thu Hein, Prof Dr Zaw Moe Hein, Prof Dr Aung Thein Tun, Prof Dr Kyaw Tint, Prof Dr Ko Ko Soe and Prof Dr Aung Win from the University of Dental Medicine (Mandalay) as well as Prof Dr Hla Myo Naing from the University of Medicine  Yangon gave lectures on jaw and oral medicine.
